The United States is rapidly moving the aircraft and logistical support required to sustain a much wider air campaign against Iran, even as the Trump administration continues to say that diplomacy remains possible.
The latest buildup includes additional F-35 stealth fighters, specialised F-16 aircraft and dozens of aerial-refuelling tankers. The deployment does not prove that President Donald Trump has authorised a full-scale war. It does show that Washington is assembling the range, firepower and endurance required to launch one.
Dozens Of Refuelling Aircraft Are Moving Into Position
Axios reported that the Trump administration informed Isr∗el that several dozen additional American refuelling aircraft would be sent ahead of a possible expansion of military operations against Iran.
At the time of the report, approximately 30 American tankers were already stationed at Ben Gurion International Airport and a similar number at Ramon Air Base. The additional deployment would restore the tanker presence to levels seen near the beginning of the war.
Trump was reportedly considering attacks on Iranian infrastructure, further strikes on nuclear-related facilities and an underground site known as Pickaxe Mountain, but no final decision had been publicly confirmed.
At least 14 tankers reportedly arrived during the July 18–19 weekend, although the Pentagon has not released a complete inventory. Isr∗eli security sources said dozens of American tankers would be distributed across Isr∗eli military bases and Ramon Airport, while Ben Gurion would remain available if a still larger force package were required.
Tankers are not merely support aircraft. They allow fighters and bombers to fly farther, remain airborne longer and conduct repeated missions without returning to distant bases for fuel.
A large tanker force is therefore one of the clearest signs that the United States is preparing for a sustained campaign rather than a short round of retaliation.
The Fighters Reveal The Kind Of War Washington Is Preparing For
The Pentagon is also redeploying F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters from Britain and F-16 Fighting Falcons from Germany.
The German-based aircraft belong to the 480th Fighter Squadron, whose “Wild Weasel” mission specialises in locating, disrupting and destroying enemy radar and surface-to-air missile systems.
Combined with the F-35’s stealth and surveillance capabilities, their deployment would help American aircraft operate against more heavily defended targets deeper inside Iran.
This matters because the military options reportedly presented to Trump extend beyond the current strikes around the Strait of Hormuz.
The aircraft do not reveal which targets he will approve. But governments do not normally wait until after authorising a larger war to assemble the forces required to fight it.
Iran Is Widening Its Retaliation
The buildup is unfolding as Iran widens its retaliation against American positions and regional partners.
Iranian forces have claimed or carried out attacks targeting American-linked sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, while the United States and Iran have exchanged strikes over consecutive nights.
The Strait of Hormuz remains technically open, but commercial traffic and energy shipments have fallen sharply as the danger to ships, crews and insurers rises.
Washington’s expanding air campaign has therefore not removed Iran’s ability to threaten the pressure point at the centre of the conflict.
Isr∗el has reportedly not led the latest direct strikes, but it is hosting American tankers and supporting the United States campaign. Positioning those aircraft at Isr∗eli military bases shortens response times, reduces pressure on civilian airports and deepens operational coordination between the two militaries.
Diplomacy In Public, War Infrastructure In Practice
American officials continue to insist that negotiations remain possible. Yet the military posture tells a more alarming story.
F-35s provide stealth. Wild Weasel F-16s suppress air defences. Tankers make long-range and repeated attacks possible.
Stationing those assets across Isr∗el and the wider region gives Trump the ability to escalate quickly while keeping the final political decision deliberately unclear.
A full-scale United States-Iran war has not been publicly announced. But the machinery needed for one is already moving into place.
