Al-Aqsa Incursions Are Escalating Through 2026, and the Trend Line Tells the Real Story

Dozens of Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem on Wednesday through the Moroccan Gate, performing rituals in its courtyards under Israeli military protection while forces continued blocking Palestinian worshippers from entering. Viewed alone, it reads as one more entry in a long, grim pattern. Viewed against the rest of 2026, it’s the latest data point in a trend that’s been steadily climbing all year.
This Week’s Incursion
According to Jerusalem’s Islamic Endowments Department, 584 settlers entered the compound during the early morning tour period, timed to coincide with the start of a new month in the Hebrew calendar, a period when right-wing settler groups routinely increase the frequency of their visits. The Arab League issued an official condemnation the same afternoon, warning of a dangerous escalation aimed at imposing a new reality at the site. The same day, several Palestinians suffered breathing problems from toxic gas during a separate Israeli military raid on the market in Balata refugee camp, and settlers began expanding a settlement outpost north of Jerusalem.
Tracking the Numbers Across the Year
This week’s incursion sits inside a documented pattern of growth. In April, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led roughly 1,251 settlers into the compound. By May, that number had climbed slightly to about 1,412, with Ben-Gvir again participating, this time waving an Israeli flag ahead of the annual Flag March marking Jerusalem Day. The clearest jump came in July, when more than 4,200 settlers and far-right activists entered the compound during Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of mourning, in what Al Jazeera described as one of the largest incursions of the year, drawing a joint condemnation from eight Arab and Muslim nations including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and the UAE.
Why the August Numbers Actually Matter More
At first glance, this week’s figure of 584 might look like a decline from July’s 4,200. But the comparison misses the point. July’s incursion coincided with a major religious flashpoint specifically chosen by settler groups to maximize participation. This week’s incursion carried no such occasion, it happened during a routine monthly tour period. Getting more than 500 settlers into the compound on an ordinary date is itself a sign of how normalized these incursions have become across the year, not a sign the pattern is slowing down.
A Shift From Fringe Activity to Government Policy
What has changed most significantly through 2026 isn’t just the numbers, it’s who is leading them. Palestinian officials in the Jerusalem Governorate have explicitly said Ben-Gvir’s direct, repeated participation marks a shift from attacks by extremist fringe groups to the official adoption of these practices by the Israeli government itself. Ben-Gvir has been unambiguous about his own intentions, telling reporters during one incursion that he feels like he is the owner of this place, and his office has said he is actively working to secure more entry permits for Jewish visitors and to allow prayer at the site, a change to the long-standing status quo Netanyahu’s office has repeatedly denied is happening.
The Legal Framework Being Eroded
Under a 1967 arrangement, the Jordanian-appointed Islamic Waqf has served as custodian of the Al-Aqsa compound, an arrangement observed, however imperfectly, by successive Israeli governments. Since 2003, Israeli police have unilaterally permitted settler visits despite repeated Palestinian objections, but the scale and official backing behind 2026’s incursions represent a departure even from that already contested precedent.
Condemnations That Haven’t Slowed the Trend
International reaction has followed a consistent script all year, individual, forceful condemnation after each incursion, from the Arab League, from joint statements by multiple governments, from the UN warning that such violations amount to an attempt to change Jerusalem’s legal status quo. None of it has interrupted the underlying trajectory. Each major incursion in 2026 has either matched or exceeded the numbers from earlier in the year, and this week’s episode, however modest by comparison to July, fits squarely inside that same rising pattern rather than standing apart from it.
Why This Trend Line Is the Real Story
Individually, each incursion generates a headline and a condemnation, then fades from coverage until the next one. Tracked together, the numbers describe something condemnations alone haven’t addressed, a steady, accelerating increase in scale and frequency that shows no sign of leveling off as the year continues.
