Lionel Messi has spent much of his public life avoiding political controversy. His image is built around football, family and philanthropy, allowing supporters across borders to project their own values onto him.
But an investigation by MintPress News has placed that neutrality under scrutiny by tracing his commercial relationships with Isr*eli technology companies, meetings with Benjamin Netanyahu and reported use of Isr*eli security specialists.
Some of those connections are documented. Others remain unverified allegations. Together, they raise a harder question: what does neutrality mean when one of the world’s most influential athletes maintains relationships carrying clear political significance, and once spoke up for the very people he now stays silent about?
Messi Once Spoke For Gaza’s Children
In August 2014, as Israel’s military campaign in Gaza killed hundreds of children, Messi posted a statement in English and Arabic as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador: “As a father and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, I am terribly saddened by the images coming from the conflict between Israel and Palestine, where violence has already claimed so many young lives and to injure countless children. Children did not create this conflict, but they are paying the ultimate price.”
It was a rare political moment from a man who almost never comments on world events. He hasn’t repeated it since.
Messi Became the Global Face of Isr*eli Technology
Three years after that statement, in 2017, Messi became a global ambassador for Sirin Labs, a Tel Aviv-based company developing security-focused blockchain devices. Reporting by Forbes described the agreement as an effort to bring the company’s technology into the mainstream through Messi’s enormous international profile.
Three years after that, in 2020, he signed an ambassador agreement with OrCam Technologies, an Isr*eli company producing AI-powered assistive devices for blind and visually impaired people. According to independent coverage of the deal, Messi promoted OrCam MyEye, a wearable device designed to read text, recognise faces and identify objects.
These were not hidden relationships. Messi openly lent his name, image and global reach to two Isr*eli technology brands, deal by deal, in the years after he had once spoken up for Palestinian children.
The Unit 8200 Allegations
MintPress went further, connecting OrCam personnel to veterans of Unit 8200, the Isr*eli military division responsible for signals intelligence, cyber operations and surveillance.
The investigation suggested that Messi’s partnership placed his brand within Isr*el’s wider military-intelligence ecosystem. But its most serious implications have not been independently established.
There is no verified evidence that Messi selected OrCam because of Unit 8200 links, knew the military backgrounds of individual employees or participated in surveillance or military-related work. OrCam publicly presents itself as an assistive-technology company, and Messi’s advertised role focused on accessibility.
Independent reporting has also not established that OrCam itself operates as a military or intelligence contractor.
The distinction matters. Former military and intelligence personnel are widespread across Isr*el’s technology sector. Their employment may justify scrutiny, but it does not automatically prove that every civilian company they join functions as an intelligence operation.
From the Peace Tour to Netanyahu
Messi’s connections extended beyond corporate endorsements.
In 2013, he joined FC Barcelona’s highly publicised Peace Tour, which included meetings with Netanyahu, Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The delegation visited both Isr*el and the occupied Palestinian territories.
That Palestinian component is essential context. The tour was presented as an attempt to promote dialogue, not as an exclusive endorsement of Isr*el.
Yet photographs of Messi alongside Netanyahu still provided the Isr*eli government with something politically valuable: the prestige and cultural legitimacy attached to football’s biggest star.
Claims Surrounding Messi’s Security Team
MintPress also alleged that Messi’s personal security arrangements extended into Isr*el’s intelligence world.
Reporting before his 2017 wedding stated that experienced Isr*eli security specialists would help protect the event alongside local authorities. What remains unproven is whether those individuals were active intelligence officers, represented Mossad or Shin Bet, or maintained any official relationship with the Isr*eli state.
Describing private security professionals as serving secret agents without supporting evidence would turn an investigative question into an unsupported factual claim.
A Timeline That Raises Its Own Question
The evidence does not prove that Messi knowingly collaborated with an intelligence organisation. It does show a clear timeline: outspoken sympathy for Gaza’s children in 2014, followed by a widening web of Isr*eli commercial and political ties from 2017 onward, followed by total silence since October 2023.
Silence does not prove complicity. But neutrality does not exist in a vacuum. The man who once wrote that Palestinian children “did not create this conflict” has said nothing as another generation of them pays what he once called “the ultimate price.”
The real contradiction is not hidden espionage. It is that the same voice that once spoke for Gaza’s children fell silent in the years his ties to Isr*el grew deepest, precisely when Palestinians needed that platform most.
