Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, one of the most politically powerful religious symbols in Modi-era India, is now at the center of a donation theft scandal. Police arrested eight people, including six employees tied to the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust, over the alleged embezzlement of temple donations. Investigators say close to ₹80 lakh has been recovered so far, and the accused were sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Why The Ram Temple Matters So Much
For many Hindus, Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. But the site’s modern political weight comes from the Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque demolished by a Hindu mob in 1992, an act that triggered nationwide violence killing roughly 2,000 people, most of them Muslim. That moment helped propel the BJP toward national power. In 2019, India’s Supreme Court awarded the disputed site to Hindu groups, and Modi personally consecrated the temple in January 2024, framing it as a defining national moment.
What Investigators Say They Found
Police say the alleged theft happened inside the temple’s donation-counting system. Two SBI employees supervised six outsourced staff responsible for counting cash and transporting it to the bank, and all six have been arrested. The SBI had reportedly recommended removing the counting staff months earlier over suspected irregularities, but some trust officials opposed the move. Police have since expanded the probe to the temple’s bank, questioning branch officials as part of the investigation.
The Political Pressure On Modi And The BJP
The scandal is politically dangerous because Modi tied his image directly to the temple’s consecration. Congress has demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe and the dissolution of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and the Ayodhya Bar Association has said its members will not represent the accused. India’s Supreme Court declined to fast-track a public interest litigation seeking a forensic audit, though the case remains active.
Why This Scandal Cuts Beyond Money
For devotees, donations are acts of faith. When that money is allegedly siphoned off by the people trusted to protect it, the scandal becomes betrayal, not just corruption. For the BJP, a symbol built as proof of Hindu nationalist victory is now under criminal investigation, and opposition parties are using it to challenge the party’s claim to religious credibility.
