Kashmir Dispute Returns to the United Nations
A renewed India Pakistan diplomatic confrontation unfolded at the United Nations General Assembly after Pakistan highlighted the Kashmir dispute during discussions on the UN Security Council’s annual report.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, argued that Jammu and Kashmir remains an unresolved international dispute that continues to engage the attention of the Security Council. According to Pakistan, the issue has remained on the Council’s agenda for more than seven decades and continues to have implications for regional peace and security.

Pakistan Calls for Self Determination
Pakistan emphasized that more than twenty communications concerning the India Pakistan question were brought before the Security Council during the reporting period of 2025. Islamabad maintained that lasting peace in South Asia requires a just settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
Pakistan reiterated its longstanding position that the people of Kashmir should be allowed to exercise their right to self determination through a UN supervised process. The Pakistani delegation also linked Kashmir with Palestine, describing both as unresolved issues that continue to demand international attention.
India Rejects Pakistan’s Claims
India strongly opposed Pakistan’s remarks during the General Assembly session. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, stated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.
New Delhi accused Pakistan of misusing international forums to advance political narratives and reiterated its position that Kashmir is an internal matter. India maintained that Pakistan should focus on its responsibilities rather than raising what it considers settled issues at the United Nations.
Growing Diplomatic Tensions
The exchange quickly escalated into a broader diplomatic confrontation. Pakistan’s representatives responded by arguing that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognized dispute and that relevant Security Council resolutions have not been implemented.
Islamabad also criticized India’s policies in the region and called for greater international scrutiny of developments in Kashmir. The sharp rhetoric from both sides underscored the continuing divide between the two nuclear armed neighbors.

Regional Stability and South Asia
The latest United Nations debate demonstrates that Kashmir remains one of the most significant geopolitical issues in South Asia. While India insists that the region is an integral part of the country, Pakistan continues to advocate for international involvement and a resolution based on UN resolutions.
As diplomatic exchanges continue, the Kashmir dispute remains central to India Pakistan relations and a key factor influencing regional stability, international diplomacy, and security discussions at the United Nations.
