Pakistan Helped Build A Peace Roadmap in Switzerland. Isr*el And Its Settlers Are Setting It On Fire.

Pakistan And Qatar’s Role In The Switzerland Peace Roadmap

At the Bürgenstock summit in Switzerland, Pakistan and Qatar helped push US-Iran diplomacy forward after weeks of war, threats and regional instability. Reuters reported that mediators Pakistan and Qatar announced a 60-day roadmap toward a final agreement between the United States and Iran. The talks also produced a communication line to help keep shipping safe through the Strait of Hormuz, and a Lebanon de-confliction mechanism meant to help end military operations there.

That made Pakistan’s role unusually visible. In video from the summit, US Vice President JD Vance praised Pakistan’s role and Field Marshal Asim Munir’s involvement in the peace process. Pakistan was not simply reacting to a regional crisis from the outside. It was inside the room, helping hold one of the world’s most dangerous diplomatic processes together.

The Summit Was Tense Before The Deal Was Even Built

Axios reported that Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi was present at the talks but did not join JD Vance for a public photo-op or joint press moment. Iranian state media said the US rejected Iran’s request for a joint photo opportunity, while a US official said Iran had agreed to press availability but pulled back after seeing the number of journalists. Another viral summit moment added to the awkwardness. Footage appeared to show Qatar’s prime minister greeting Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as JD Vance stood nearby.

Trump’s Threats And Iran’s Reported Walkout

According to Reuters, Trump warned that the United States could hit Iran again if Tehran did not stop its allies in Lebanon. Iranian media said Tehran refused to return to the room after Trump’s threat. US officials disputed the idea of a full walkout and said talks continued through Pakistani and Qatari intermediaries.

Lebanon Became The First Test

The Guardian reported that Lebanon was central to the Switzerland talks, with Pakistan and Qatar helping push the de-confliction mechanism forward. But that mechanism faces a basic contradiction. Isr*el has continued to claim the right to act against threats in Lebanon. Hezbollah has rejected any arrangement that leaves Isr*eli forces operating on Lebanese territory. Lebanon’s government can sign a framework, but the armed reality on the ground does not disappear because diplomats wrote a roadmap in Switzerland.

Amnesty Called It What It Is: State-Led Ethnic Cleansing

On June 10, Amnesty International released a 149-page report formally accusing Isr*el of accelerating a state-driven campaign of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians in the West Bank. The report documented how at least 117 predominantly Bedouin and herding communities have faced full or partial displacement between January 2023 and April 2026, with approximately 5,910 people forcibly displaced.

“These abuses are not the result of a few ‘bad apples’,” said Amnesty secretary general Agnes Callamard. “Settler violence is a core component of a state-sanctioned campaign of ethnic cleansing. What we are witnessing is deliberate, state-led annexation, in complete violation of international law, unfolding before the eyes of the entire world.”

Amnesty HYPERLINK “https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/acceleration-of-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-palestinians-must-spur-global-action-to-halt-west-bank-annexation/”‘ HYPERLINK “https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/acceleration-of-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-palestinians-must-spur-global-action-to-halt-west-bank-annexation/”s report also found that by February 2026, Isr*eli authorities had already seized half of all unregistered land in Area C, which accounts for 58% of the West Bank. The government approved or legalised 103 settlements between late 2022 and April 2026, the largest number authorised by any Israeli government in history.

Six Attacks A Day. Every Day. On Record.

OCHA confirmed on June 11 that settler attacks causing casualties or property damage in the West Bank had already surpassed 1,000 incidents in 2026, affecting more than 230 communities. The current pace, an average of six attacks per day, is higher than in any year since OCHA began documenting such incidents in 2006. More than 2,200 Palestinians have been displaced this year due to settler violence and access restrictions.

Yasser Rashid: The 92-Year-Old Nearly Burned Alive Inside A Mosque

Al Jazeera identified one of the victims as Yasser Saqer Rashid, a 92-year-old Palestinian American. Rashid was inside al-Marah mosque after Maghrib prayer, reading the Quran, when settlers stormed the courtyard outside. He said a settler poured an incendiary substance on the mosque window and pointed it toward his face and clothes.

“He wanted to burn me alive,” Rashid told Al Jazeera. Democracy Now also aired Rashid’s account: “I looked out the window and leaned forward. Suddenly, a person with a gasoline canister sprayed it in my eyes and on my clothes and lit the fire. The window caught on fire, but I stepped back, and it did not get to me. Thank God.”

According to Al Jazeera HYPERLINK “https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/16/palestine-weekly-wrap-world-sanctions-settlers-israel-funds-settlements”‘ HYPERLINK “https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/6/16/palestine-weekly-wrap-world-sanctions-settlers-israel-funds-settlements”s weekly Palestine wrap, 50 to 60 masked, armed settlers attacked Deir Dibwan and neighbouring Burqa that night, torching six vehicles, partially burning a home, and setting fire to mosque entrances in both villages. Three days later, settlers burned two more mosques in Jiljiliya and Mazra HYPERLINK “https://www.timesofisrael.com/settlers-set-fire-to-two-west-bank-mosques-overnight/”‘ HYPERLINK “https://www.timesofisrael.com/settlers-set-fire-to-two-west-bank-mosques-overnight/”a al-Nubani, spray-painting “Hi from the Hilltop Youth” and “Revenge” on the walls.

Deir Dibwan’s American Passport Problem

TRT World reported that roughly 70 percent of Deir Dibwan’s residents hold US citizenship. That status has not protected them from settler attacks. After the June 14 attack, the US Embassy contacted the Deir Dibwan municipality. But Middle East Monitor reported that residents said contact had not translated into practical protection on the ground.

Hilltop Youth: The Settler Group Now Linked To State Funding

Times of Israel reported that the Isr*eli government planned to provide NIS 5.5 million, about $1.9 million, to fund monthly stipends for 650+ settler youth linked to Hilltop Youth networks. Anadolu Agency, citing Yedioth Ahronoth, reported that each member would receive roughly $550 per month through the end of 2026.

In 2024, the US Treasury designated the group under sanctions, finding it had repeatedly attacked Palestinians, destroyed homes and property, and destabilised the West Bank through killings, arson, assaults and intimidation. The European Union imposed the same sanctions.

International Pressure Has Not Stopped The Violence

The UK, Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand and Norway announced coordinated sanctions against extremist settler networks in the West Bank. Norway went further, announcing a proposed bill to ban all trade with Isr*eli settlements. But as Amnesty HYPERLINK “https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/acceleration-of-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-palestinians-must-spur-global-action-to-halt-west-bank-annexation/”‘ HYPERLINK “https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/acceleration-of-israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-palestinians-must-spur-global-action-to-halt-west-bank-annexation/”s Callamard said: “These limited measures are woefully insufficient to address the state campaign of ethnic cleansing.”

Why This Roadmap Is Already Being Tested

The Switzerland summit produced real diplomatic movement. Pakistan and Qatar deserve credit for helping move US-Iran talks forward when the region was days away from wider war. But diplomacy does not exist in a vacuum. Lebanon is still unstable. Hezbollah remains a battlefield actor. Isr*el continues to claim security justifications for military action. Palestinians in the West Bank are facing the highest rate of settler attacks ever recorded. And Amnesty has formally concluded that what is happening in the West Bank is not settler excess. It is state policy.

A peace deal cannot be judged by who shook hands in Switzerland. It has to be judged by whether Lebanon stops burning, whether Palestinians can stay on their land, and whether a 92-year-old man like Yasser Rashid can pray inside a mosque without someone trying to set him on fire.
