Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney has spent nearly four years investigating Elon Musk. His new documentary, Musk, runs almost four hours and examines the billionaire’s personal relationships, business practices, technological ambitions and political influence.
But the film has generated a controversy of its own. Musk has denounced the production, his lawyer has threatened legal action, and major technology platforms initially rejected paid advertising for its trailer.
The investigation raises an increasingly consequential question: What happens when one person’s businesses become deeply embedded in public life?

A $40 Million Offer to Remain Silent?
One of the documentary’s most prominent allegations comes from Ashley St. Clair, who shares a child with Musk.
St. Clair claims she rejected a confidentiality arrangement worth approximately $40 million. Reported terms included $15 million upfront and monthly payments of $100,000 for 21 years.
She describes the alleged arrangement as an attempt to prevent her from speaking publicly. Musk disputes her account.
According to Associated Press reporting, the documentary includes an audio recording involving Musk associate Jared Birchall and negotiations concerning confidentiality and parental support.
The allegation remains contested. The reported financial terms should not be confused with a confirmed payment.
Musk’s Relationships and His Desire for More Children
St. Clair also alleges that Musk approached women about having children, including proposals involving sperm donation.
Musk has repeatedly expressed concerns about declining birth rates. The documentary explores the intersection between those publicly stated beliefs and testimony from people involved in his personal life.
The film features former partners and family members, including Justine Musk. Their accounts offer perspectives on the private relationships behind one of the world’s most visible technology figures.
These are personal testimonies, and their inclusion does not independently establish every allegation.

Tesla’s Self-Driving Promises Face Examination
The documentary also investigates Tesla’s promotion of autonomous-driving technology.
Former insiders question the presentation of early demonstrations, while Gibney revisits fatal crashes involving Tesla vehicles and driver-assistance systems.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has investigated Autopilot-related safety concerns, including driver attention and the system’s limitations.
Tesla maintains that its driver-assistance features require active supervision and that drivers must remain prepared to intervene.
The film raises questions involving more than 60 deaths, but an essential distinction remains: A crash involving Autopilot does not automatically prove that the technology caused it. Reported incidents, regulatory findings and established causation are different categories of evidence.
The 10,000 Lasers in Space Controversy
Another dispute involves private messages Musk exchanged with St. Clair during the 2024 presidential campaign.
In the exchange, Musk referred to having 10,000 lasers in space.
His attorney, Alex Spiro, argues that the reference concerned laser communication links between Starlink satellites, rather than voting systems.
The messages attracted controversy because of Musk’s political involvement and the broader debate surrounding election infrastructure.
However, Gibney has clarified that the film does not allege Musk rigged the election. There is no credible evidence establishing that Starlink manipulated the 2024 presidential vote.

Musk Fights Back Against the Documentary
Musk has publicly criticised Gibney and challenged the documentary’s credibility.
Spiro has threatened legal action over the film’s presentation, particularly concerning the election-related controversy.
Gibney maintains that his team repeatedly invited Musk to participate and stands by the investigation.
The filmmaker’s approach includes interviews with former associates, journalists and family members, alongside an AI-generated visual representation of Musk using his recorded statements.
The dispute highlights the difficulty of investigating influential public figures when filmmakers and their subjects disagree over both evidence and interpretation.
Why Were the Trailer Advertisements Rejected?
The documentary’s promotional campaign encountered another obstacle.
X, TikTok, Meta and YouTube initially rejected paid trailer advertising.
Meta subsequently described its rejection as an error, while YouTube cleared the advertising following review.
The distinction matters: The trailer was not universally banned from being viewed. The controversy concerned paid advertising placements.
There is no established evidence that Musk personally orchestrated these decisions.
Meanwhile, Gibney said Universal had hesitated over international distribution. Universal has reaffirmed its commitment to the film.

From Tesla to the White House: Who Holds Musk Accountable?
Ultimately, Musk is not solely about disputed personal allegations.
Tesla influences transportation, SpaceX provides launch infrastructure, Starlink supplies satellite communications, and X shapes online discussion.
Musk’s relationship with Donald Trump and his government involvement have added another dimension to questions about corporate power, political access and public oversight.
The documentary presents a critical interpretation of that concentration of influence. Musk rejects the film’s portrayal.
Its underlying question nevertheless extends beyond one individual.
When private technology companies become essential to public infrastructure and government, what mechanisms ensure their leaders remain accountable?
