FIFA VAR Technology Upgrade
FIFA has announced a major upgrade to offside technology for the 2026 World Cup aimed at improving VAR speed and accuracy. The system introduces semi automated offside detection designed to reduce delays and improve match flow by assisting referees with real time alerts during live play.
Faster Offside Alerts and Referee Support
The new system will send instant audio notifications to assistant referees when a player is detected more than 10cm offside. This is a major improvement from earlier versions tested at the Club World Cup, which only triggered alerts for margins greater than 50cm. The assistant referee will still decide when to raise the flag, ensuring human control remains part of the decision making process.
Limitations and Human Oversight
Despite its improvements, the technology cannot fully resolve extremely tight offside situations or complex positional interactions involving multiple players. It is designed only for positional offside decisions and not subjective interpretations such as interference with opponents. Referees can also override system alerts if technical issues are suspected.

AI Powered Player Tracking System
A key innovation includes AI generated 3D avatars of all 1248 players participating in the tournament. These avatars are created using rapid digital scanning during pre tournament preparations. The system enhances accuracy in determining exact player positions when offside lines are drawn, improving clarity for referees and broadcast visuals.
Ball Tracking and Match Accuracy Improvements
The upgraded system also includes advanced ball tracking technology that can determine whether the ball has crossed the line before a goal or corner. A chip embedded in the ball will help identify the last player to make contact, supporting more precise officiating decisions.
Improved Transparency for Fans and Officials

FIFA is also expanding real time 3D replay systems and introducing “line of sight” analysis tools that simulate goalkeeper perspectives. These innovations aim to make VAR decisions clearer and more transparent for both officials and fans watching worldwide.
