From Lebanon To Gaza, Churches And Mosques Are Both Caught In Isr*el’s War

What began as one shocking image in a Christian-majority village in southern Lebanon has now evolved into a much wider controversy stretching across both Christianity and Islam.

The trigger was a photograph taken in Debel, Lebanon, showing an IDF soldier placing a cigarette into the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue while smoking himself. The image spread rapidly across social media, drawing anger from Christians across the Middle East and reigniting accusations that sacred symbols are increasingly being humiliated during Isr*el’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza.

The IDF confirmed the image was authentic, called the incident serious, and announced an investigation. But for many in the region, the backlash was never just about one photo.

A Pattern, Not An Incident

Only weeks earlier, another incident emerged from the same village. Two Israeli soldiers were disciplined after one was photographed smashing the head of a crucified Jesus statue with a sledgehammer while another filmed the scene. The incident sparked outrage in Lebanon and Europe, with Italy later sending a replacement crucifix to the village church.

As the Virgin Mary image spread online, older videos and allegations resurfaced rapidly. One video appeared to show Israeli soldiers staging a mock wedding ceremony inside an Orthodox church in Deir Mimas, Lebanon, laughing and treating the church like a performance space. In another controversy, graffiti allegedly left behind by IDF troops in southern Lebanon included the phrase: “A good Shiite is a dead Shiite.”

The Outrage Expanded Beyond Christian Symbols

In Gaza and southern Lebanon, critics pointed to damaged mosques, alleged Quran desecration, and attacks near historic Islamic sites. Footage previously circulated online appearing to show Israeli soldiers burning copies of the Quran inside a mosque in Gaza, prompting condemnation and an internal military police review.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s 400-year-old Great Mosque of Bint Jbeil was heavily destroyed during fighting. In Chamaa, an airstrike damaged the Shrine of Prophet Shamoun al-Safa, a religious site connected to a UNESCO tentative heritage zone that had reportedly already suffered damage during earlier Israeli strikes.

The Scale Of Destruction In Gaza

Religious charities and church organizations also accused Isr*el of targeting Christian sites. A convent belonging to the Salvatorian Sisters in Yaroun was demolished during military operations, prompting outrage from French Catholic organizations. The IDF said it did not initially realize the structure was religious and alleged Hezbollah activity nearby.

Across Gaza, satellite imagery and local authorities estimate that around 79 percent of mosques have been damaged or destroyed during the war. The Church of Saint Porphyrius, one of the world’s oldest churches, was also struck in 2023 while civilians were sheltering inside, killing multiple people according to church officials.

What Religious Leaders Are Saying

Religious leaders now warn the controversy is becoming much larger than isolated incidents involving individual soldiers. The parish priest in Debel described the Virgin Mary incident as evidence of extremism and intolerance toward communities that had tried to remain peaceful during the conflict. Christian organizations in the Holy Land have also warned that harassment and attacks against Christians are becoming an existential challenge.

Even Pope Leo XIV joined a surprise video call with priests from southern Lebanese villages, including Debel, assuring them they were in his prayers and expressing hope for peace.

The debate now is no longer about damaged buildings or viral photographs. It is about whether sacred symbols are being deliberately pulled into modern warfare, and whether the institutions responsible for accountability are moving nearly fast enough to matter.
