Islamophobia Turns Deadly In San Diego

A Mosque Under Attack On Islam’s Holiest Morning

The first shots were fired at 11:43am.

Outside the Islamic Center of San Diego, one of the largest mosques in California, worshippers had gathered during one of the most sacred periods in the Islamic calendar. Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic year, is the season of Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca that stands as one of the five pillars of Islam. For millions of Muslims worldwide, its first ten days are spent in prayer, fasting, charity, and reflection. Families were gathering. Children were in class.

Then gunfire erupted across the parking lot.

Within minutes, children were hiding inside classrooms, armed police flooded the mosque grounds, and a place built for prayer became a crime scene. By the end of the attack, three men were dead. One of them was security guard Amin Abdullah, whose final moments are now being described by officials as an act of heroism that likely prevented a much larger massacre.

Police Were Warned Before The Shooting Began

One of the most disturbing details emerged only hours later.

At 9:42am, more than two hours before the shooting, the mother of 17-year-old suspect Cain Clark contacted San Diego Police to report her son missing and suicidal. She told officers he had taken several firearms from the home, including a shotgun, a handgun, and a Mini-14 rifle. She said he was dressed in camouflage and accompanied by another teenager.

Police initially feared the weapons could be linked to a possible school shooting and sent officers toward James Madison High School. But while authorities were still trying to locate the suspects, gunfire erupted outside the mosque instead.

Both suspects, Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, were later found dead inside a BMW parked blocks away from the Islamic Center. Police say both died from suspected self-inflicted gunshot wounds. No police officers fired a single shot during the entire incident.

Children Escaped. A Security Guard Did Not.

As officers moved through the mosque complex, children from Al Rashid School were placed into lockdown before being evacuated outside.

Aerial footage showed groups of children holding hands as heavily armed police escorted them through the parking lot.

All survived.

Amin Abdullah did not.

Officials say the mosque security guard confronted the attackers long enough for worshippers and children to take shelter. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria described Abdullah’s actions as “heroism” that undoubtedly saved lives. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor in the city’s history, responded to the attack directly: “Islamophobia endangers Muslim communities across this country. We must confront it directly and stand together against the politics of fear and division.”

The mosque’s Imam, Taha Hassane, called the attack “extremely outrageous,” saying people came to the Islamic Center “to pray, to celebrate, to learn. All places of worship in our beautiful city should always be protected.”

Investigators Found Anti-Islamic Writings, Hate Speech, And Nazi Symbols

Authorities are treating the shooting as a hate crime investigation.

Police say anti-Islamic writings were discovered inside the suspects’ vehicle alongside a suicide note referencing “racial pride.” Investigators found the words “hate speech” written directly onto one of the firearms used in the attack. A gas canister displaying an SS symbol, associated with Nazi Germany’s elite military units, was also recovered from the scene.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed: “There was definitely hate rhetoric that was involved.” The FBI has now joined the investigation.

The Islamic Center of San Diego has been targeted before. In January 1991, during the Gulf War, the same mosque was the site of an attempted bombing and received waves of hate calls. That attack came during a period of war in the Middle East. This one did too.

Islamophobia Complaints Reach Record Levels In America

The Council on American-Islamic Relations recorded 8,683 anti-Muslim discrimination complaints in 2025, the highest number since the organisation began tracking cases in 1996. CAIR directly linked the surge to the war in Gaza and to the political rhetoric surrounding Muslim communities across the United States.

That rhetoric has not stayed abstract. US Congressman Randy Fine, a Trump ally, said late last year that Muslims should “be destroyed.” After three Muslims were killed in San Diego on Monday, right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who has close ties to the Trump administration, called for the Islamic Center to be raided by the FBI and immigration authorities. She wrote about the mosque’s congregation: “Just remember, the people who attend this mosque want us all to be killed.”

A man died protecting worshippers at 11:43am. By the afternoon, a political ally of the sitting president was on the internet calling for the survivors to be targeted next.

The cost of ignoring that pattern is already being counted. Cities across America, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington DC, have all deployed additional police to mosques following the attack, a resource burden that falls directly on Muslim communities who had nothing to do with what happened in San Diego. For the businesses, families, and schools in the Clairemont neighbourhood surrounding the Islamic Center, Monday’s attack has already changed what it means to gather for prayer.
